HR Director issues special injury alert

Every injury causes pain and suffering to the individual and affects their families, colleagues and friends. In ESB our goal is to have no injuries at work. Since 1997 we have moved closer to that goal each year.

However, due to a deterioration over the last few months, the current trend suggests that in 2008 we will have more accidents than we consider acceptable. If this trend is not reversed this will be the first time since 1997 that our accident numbers will have been greater than the previous year.

Each Business Unit is looking at the accidents they are having and taking action to address the causes and prevent future occurrences. They are also briefing all staff on these measures appropriate to their accident history.

This special notice is to support the actions being put in place in the different business areas and to ask everyone to redouble their efforts to redress the current trend and ensure a safe work environment for all.

What I can do to make a difference?
I am asking all staff and contractors to make a conscious commitment to maintain their own safety and that of their colleagues, to become more alert to the potential risks associated with common workplace hazards and to take action where new hazards arise.

Possible interventions include:

  • Support and actively engage in Safety Plans for your area.
  • Take time for safety. Think about what you are about to do and apply the best techniques. If in doubt ask for help.
  • Watch your step. Be alert to the risk of slipping or tripping wherever you are walking.
  • Save your back. Always apply the proper technique when lifting objects – no matter how light they may be.
  • Look out for the safety of colleagues and encourage safe behaviours in others.
  • Tell your supervisor of any hazards which you think may not be adequately controlled.
  • Respond promptly when hazards are brought to your attention.
  • Continue to apply the correct rules and procedures for high risk activities such as working with electricity, working on heights, driving, and tools and equipment.
  • If you are not adequately trained or equipped to do a job, then don’t do it.

Please do all that you can to protect yourself and your colleagues from injury.
