ESB Power Generation Excellence in Health and Safety Awards 2007 The Power Generation 2007 Excellence in Health and Safety Award winners were announced by ESB Executive Director Pat O’ Doherty, to an eagerly awaiting audience at the Power Generation Safety Conference at the Silver Springs Hotel in Cork. This award, which was introduced by the ESB Power Generation Safety Committee in 2006, underlines ESB Power Generation’s commitment to safety across the business unit. The number of entrants increased to 21 this year, which is up from 16 in 2006. Entries came from a wide section of locations across the business unit, including stations, construction sites and office-based locations. The overall winner of the ESB Power Generation Excellence in Health and Safety Award for 2007 was Erne Stations for the second year running. In making this announcement, Pat O’Doherty said that Erne has risen to the challenge for further safety improvements over and above the high standards set in winning the 2006 award and that there was clear evidence of an embedded safety management culture there. While it is widely acknowledged that this award is now the premier means of recognising excellence in health and safety within the business unit, the award process takes account of a changing environment in the management of health and safety. This is evident through the feedback received from locations, an increased diversity in the entries received and account being taken of the changes to the procedures for the management of safety across the business unit. With this in mind, the ESB Power Generation Safety Committee endorsed recommendations for enhancing the award process during 2007. The Assessment Team acknowledge that further enhancements of the process will be required for the 2008 Awards. In his closing remarks Pat said this award is playing a key role in raising the standards in the management of health and safety. The award also helps facilitate shared learning across ESB Power Generation. Pat emphasised that the challenge is for all locations is to raise the bar and to achieve further improvements in their locations so as to reach excellence in the management of health and safety. |
