Music Spotlight by Daragh Mulligan

Roots & Echoes The Coral

The Coral are a seven piece band from Hoylake on the Wirral made up of two sets of brothers, James and Ian Skelly on vocals and drums. Paul and John Duffy on bass and percussion and Bill Ryder-Jones on guitar.

Nick Power on keyboards and lastly Lee Southall on guitar. They all chip in on the backing vocals and Ryder-Jones and Paul Duffy play all the brass... talented bunch these eh??

The album begins with the new single Who's Gonna Find Me which is a spirally guitar stomper, then we have the dark and funky Remember Me which sounds like it's inspired by a 60's Detective Series!

Next is the Ocean Colour Scene-esque Put The Sun Back which conjures up images of hazy summer sing-alongs. We're reminded of the Beatles classic Here Comes the Sun on the highly addictive Jacqueline. Then we arrive at the stand out track on the album Fireflies - Song of the Summer for me this one, Deep Nick Cave type vocals on top of music that wouldn't sound out of place on the soundtrack to 60's cult classics of Get Carter or The Persuaders.

In The Rain is probably the weakest song on the album but still very listenable. Then along comes the beautiful acoustic ballad Not So Lonely and we're carted back to that sing-song! Cobwebs is a cheery upbeat Country song, Rebecca You sounds like a song that Neil Hannon from the Divine Comedy would have loved to have written.

She's Got A Reason is an eerie rock song with chunky Hammond organ accompaniment and then we finish with 'Music At Night' which can only be described musical train journey. It really does sound like what a train journey would if put to music…try it, you'll see!

This record should have been out in late April because I have no doubt this would have been the sound of the Summer. We may not have actually had a Summer but you really should buy this album. At least it'll cheer you up in the traffic when the kids go back to school. Buy This Album If You Like Divine Comedy/Nick Cave/Matt Monroe/Burt Bacharach/60's Cult Movies Music.
